Grade 1

Welcome to First Grade at Thomas Lake!

First grade is an exciting year where students build foundational skills and gain confidence as learners.  Students focus on reading fundamentals, including recognizing and manipulating sounds (phonemic awareness), understanding letter-sound relationships in order to decode accurately and automatically (phonics), expanding their vocabulary, reading smoothly and with expression (fluency), and grasping what they read (comprehension). During math, students develop number sense, learn addition and subtraction strategies, understand place value, and explore geometry and measurement.  Problem-solving and clear communication are emphasized.  Students also engage in science and social studies through hands-on activities. First graders learn to work together as a community, support one another, take risks, and ask questions.  Students make new friends, use technology, and become independent learners. First Grade is an exciting year of learning!
